Under the leadership of Mayor Bill White, Houstonians approved a revenue cap on the city government's budget. However, Annise Parker wants Houstonians to possibly revisit this issue in an election this November.
Whether those who wish to grow city government like it or
not, Houstonians want fiscal responsibility enshrined in our cities laws. I
have previously stated that I thought Mayor Bill White was the greatest Mayor
Houston ever had. One of the most significant things he did was pass a revenue
cap that Houstonians voted to approve. The cap combines the rate of inflation
and population growth in order to arrive to the final cap number.
Is it really surprising that we are only one Mayoral
administration into the implementation of this law and city leaders already want the cap repealed? Not to mention, is it even
more surprising that the administration waited until the Mayor was term limited and
did not have to worry about her election? Please give me your opinions in the comment
section. Should the city enforce fiscal responsibility in its charter or are
pensions and debt reason enough to put this law in the Houston history books? I
imagine this will be a big issue if this is on the ballot in November, I’m sure
we will be revisiting this development in this blog.
Of course Mayor Parker wants the cap repealed. Let's spend the city into bankruptcy like so many other cities. It's a shame but hopefully, the voters will say NO.
