Houston Astrodome

One of my favorite buildings in Houston is the Houston Astrodome. Currently, it is mired in a political struggle as to whether or not we should keep the building. The Astrodome is the closest thing to a world landmark in Houston. I hope we choose to keep it. Built in 1965, the Houston Astrodome was the world’s first domed stadium. It was the idea of Houston Mayor Roy Hofheinz. It was the only way Houston could get a baseball team with Houston’s heat. The innovation of using a dome to roof a stadium was a breakthrough in architecture and engineering at the time.

On November 5th, 2013, Houston voters voted not to turn the Astrodome into a convention center. Although since then, it has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. I hope we can keep the Astrodome, as the world's first domed stadium, it is an important part of American & architectural history. I also love the aesthetic of the Astrodome, which looks very space age. After almost 50 years of serving the Houston area, I would hate to see the Astrodome torn down not only for its important place in history but for its beautiful space age aesthetics.
